Wisdom can be implemented in so many ways. This page is dedicated to my favorite quotes from anywhere and everywhere. They are about creating wealth, value, and generally what goes into a wealthy life. That includes more than just money and I think that is the cool thing about these quotes. They can all have so many connections to random parts of your life…especially the things that matter like family, friends, work, hobbies, exercise and of course; money. Enjoy!
1. “It is unwise to spend half of your health to get wealth and then spend half your wealth to get health.”
This is a derivative of what the Dalai Lama said about humanity. It’s really scary to me that I could fall into the trap of just making decisions for money. I don’t want to be that person, but at the same time there is duality to this idea and a dichotomy that has to be balanced. I want to have complete freedom and be able to exit the game of making decisions based on money. In order to get there quickly, one might think it’s wise to sacrifice now, for abundance later. It seems like that is a bad decision if you lose yourself in the process. The truly wealthy person has wealth in more than just their bank account.
2. “Desire is a contract we make with ourselves to be unhappy until we get what we want.”
This comes from Alex Hormozi. I am unaware of where he got it but it sounds very buddhist if you ask me. basically, the goal post will always be moved and assessing why you are doing something is super important. Every time we move the goal post, we are subconsciously saying that we currently don’t have enough.
Hopefully this becomes a reminder for you and me that decisions should be made for things outside of desire and more towards fulfillment or purpose. A great exercise for this is to ask yourself where you are settling in your life and where are you sacrificing your time, money, attention etc.? this could illuminate the truth for you.
3.“There is a tax on everything. Pay it gladly and move on.”
Seneca wrote a longer version of this to Lucilius that went,“All the things which cause complaint or dread are like the taxes of life—things from which, my dear Lucilius, you should never hope for exemption or seek escape.”
Taxes are a normal part of life. An economist would say there are trade offs and incentives for everything in life. taxes are the tradeoffs of any decision you make. so make your decisions, and pay the taxes on them gladly and without aversion.
4. “Never forget… It takes very little to live a fulfilled life.
Marcus Aurelius said something along these lines in his book Meditations.
There are a lot of terms that are adjacent to this. Keeping up with the Jones’, the rat race etc. its endless. there can always be a deficit if we desire more than what we already have. Being aware of your own deficit and paying attention to why you are doing something can be eye opening. Looking for ways to streamline my life and take things away is something I struggle with and I admire in others. It is easy to say yes to things in life. It is far more difficult to remove things and free up space for time alone or time to slow down.
